Sidestep Geared Towards 2014 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

June 25th, 2014

Racing Manager of Darley Australia, Jason Walsh has confirmed exciting three-year-old Sidestep has returned to work and will be geared towards the 2014 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 28th.

Returning to work in excellent form this season, the Exceed And Excel colt was aimed towards an appearance in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben in early May, but was forced into an early spell after succumbing to a minor leg niggle in the days prior.

Having reportedly taken well to pre-work over the last week, Walsh said a path is yet to be set in stone for Sidestep this season, but the Sir Rupert Clarke will be the major target.

“We had intended to run him in the BTC Cup in Brisbane, but unfortunately he went amiss the week before that,” Walsh told Racing Ahead.

“We are going to aim him at a race like the Rupert Clarke over 1400; we think that is his ideal trip.

“We might be a little hard pressed for time to get him there, but we are very pleased with him and John thinks that he is going really well.

“He is about two weeks off starting his fast work and that looks a nice race for him on paper.”

Claiming an impressive total of three race wins and four minor places from just 13 competitive race starts to date, Sidestep was a consistent performer over the spring of 2013; finishing fourth in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and sixth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) most notably.

Returning to the track in similarly impressive form this season, the colt out of Dextrous was unlucky to finish second when blocked for a run in the final straight of the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) first-up on March 15th but returned to the winner’s circle when poking clear in the Listed Darby Munro Open (1200m) and Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) last time out.
