Akavoroun to Target 2014 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

July 23rd, 2014

A standout performer for trainer Ciaron Maher since first debuting to racing in the autumn of 2013, Akavoroun is poised to make a huge step-up in class through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, with the Caulfield trainer outlining the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 28th and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) in October as likely targets.

Returning to the track in typically scintillating form this season, Akavoroun without doubt registered his strongest career victory to date in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) last time out; strolling home to beat a talented field by a length.

Immediately returning to the spelling paddock following the impressive performance, Maher is understandably pleased with the continually building form of the Lacryma Cristi gelding, and said a return to racing is likely to figure in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 13th before progression to the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

“Akavoroun is just having a couple of weeks freshen up at the farm,” Maher told Racing Victoria.

“He will probably kick off in the Bobbie Lewis and he might then go to the Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Toorak Handicap.”

Contesting an incredible record of six race wins and one second place from just seven competitive starts to date, Akavoroun more than stamped his claims as one to watch over his maiden preparation through the 2013 autumn; comfortably winning both the Winning Edge Presentations Maiden (1400m) and Jimjoca Handicap (1400m).

Securing back-to-back victories in his first two starts this preparation, the gelding out of Salquetta was unlucky to be blocked for a run and squeezed out in the final straight of the Sportingbet Best Tote BM84 (1500m) on June 7th, finishing second.

Having since won both the VRC-CRV Winter Championship Open (1410m) on June 28th and final most recently, Akavoroun has more than earned his position amongst classy competition through major sprinting events in the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
