Trainer Ken Keys is confident rising four-year-old Rich Enuff is a genuine Group 1 horse and has underlined races like the 2015 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in late September as ideal targets.
Rich Enuff more than stamped his claims as a serious thoroughbred through a standout three-year-old season, but was unable to justify clear favouritism when finishing a close second to Shooting To Win in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11th and has not been seen at the races since placing a forgettable seventh in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
Revealing he has continued to step up the Written Tycoon colt’s work in recent weeks, Keys told RSN the horse’s connections are confident he is capable of success at the highest level and believe the 2015 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes figures as an ideal target.
“We did our first bit of work this morning, a little bit of even time and he came off bouncing,” Keys said.
“The owners have been terrific.
“They felt he is a Group One horse and should be given every opportunity to win one, so they’ve run with it.”
Posting three wins and two minors through only six career starts, Rich Enuff ran on for a credible third amongst notable competition in the Friends Of Epworth Handicap (1000m) on debut in March 2014 before immediately returning to the paddock.
Jogging home to win the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) first-up in spring, the colt out of Hotnuff continued to impress in taking out both the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) leading into his Caulfield Guineas second.
Yet to set a specific launch pad for the colt this time, Keys confirmed the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, also over the 1400m Caulfield course is likely to figure for Rich Enuff this time.
