Under The Louvre Requires Luck in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

September 22nd, 2015

Under The Louvre was included amongst a particularly talented list of 27 nominations for Saturday’s featured Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Caulfield, and trainer Robert Smerdon believes Wednesday’s barrier draw will play a crucial role in whether or not the entire will post a maiden win at the highest level.

Under The Louvre has returned in racing in career-best form this year, and has received an ideal lead-up to the 2015 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in finishing fifth in the Group 3 TheShark.com.au Stakes (1100m) and second in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) since returning in spring.

Smerdon has been understandably thrilled with Under The Louvre’s overall form and condition leading into the 2015 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, but believes the Caulfield conditions and the horse’s tendency to back mark suggest the barrier draw will be crucial.

“Barriers will play a big part,” Smerdon told AAP.

“This is one place where you need a lot of luck.

“You hope it’s a high pressure race which will suit him, and with Charmed Harmony in it, they should be running along.

“Last time he went to come out underneath a horse but there wasn’t quite the room and he had to steady, come back out and that was enough.

“An on-pacer makes his own luck, a backmarker has to have things unfold.”

Under The Louvre has posted an impressive eight wins and nine minors through his 22 career starts so far; amassing just shy of $600,000 in prize money.

Capping a strong 2014 Spring Carnival campaign with minors in the Listed The Sofitel (1400m) and Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) and success in the Listed Tavern Stakes (1400m) most notably, the son of Excellent Art returned this year for a close second to Shamal Wind in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) on February 28th.

Returning to winning form in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) on March 28th, Under The Louvre was unlucky to be held up when second in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) but ended his autumn campaign a credible third in the talent-rich Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

The 2015 Sir Rupert Clarke final field and barrier draw is due for completion and released by midday, Wednesday.
