Under The Louvre will return to his ideal conditions and distance on Saturday and leads 2016 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes nominations as a result.

A strong and consistent performer for Robert Smerdon throughout his entire racing career so far, Under The Louvre returned to racing this year for third in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on April 23rd.

Progressing to a close second behind Black Heart Bart in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), the Excellent Art entire turned the tables on the leading galloper when breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 11th.

Resuming this time for second in the Group 3 The Heath (1100m) on August 27th, Under The Louvre boxed on for fourth in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) last time out and should prove extremely tough to beat third-up on Saturday.

Black Heart Bart has not been included in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes nominations, but trainer Darren Weir is set to launch a strong attack in the sprint feature after posting nominations for both Voodoo Lad and Telopea.

Yet to finish outside the first three in seven starts for Weir, Voodoo Lad is primed for his first appearance at the highest level on Saturday, having won each of the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) and Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at his two most recent starts.

Telopea is something of an unknown quantity at this level of racing, and finished eighth in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) last time out on September 10th.

Kiwi raider Xtravagant failed to make an impact nor beat a runner home in the Bobbie Lewis Quality first-up, but has still be included in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes nominations.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the NRM Sprint (1400m) with ease in his homeland in February, Xtravagant crossed the ditch to contest the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in March but failed to make much of an impact when eighth.

Having returned home to win the Group 3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) on April 30th, the son of Pentire performed well in a Cranbourne barrier trial earlier this week and will be partnered by Damien Oliver on Saturday.

The Lindsay Park operation are another team that is set to launch a multi-pronged attack in the Group 1 race after including both Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Keen Array in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes nominations.

Posting five wins and ten minors through a busy forty-three start career so far, Fast ‘N’ Rocking failed to perform in the McKenzie Stakes last time out but will enjoy a step up in distance on Saturday.

Arguably Lindsay Park’s best chance in the race however, Keen Array placed second in the McKenzie Stakes before returning to winning form in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) last weekend.

The 2016 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
