Fifteen runners remain in contention for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield; offering punters excellent value from a betting perspective and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Counterattack has continued to herald plenty of interest in 2016 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au and remains a clear $3.70 favourite ahead of Voodoo Lad ($5) and Bon Aurum ($6.50).
Will Counterattack justify his resounding favouritism and post a maiden win at the highest level in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, or will one of his rivals post an upset?
Voodoo Lad ($5)
Trainer Darren Weir has saddle the two most recent winners of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in Trust In A Gust (2014) and Stratum Star (2015), and is offered a very good opportunity to complete the hat-trick with in-form sprinter Voodoo Lad. Yet to finish worse than third in seven starts for Weir, Voodoo Lad ran a close second in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m), and while failing to fire when third in the Bruce Gadsden BM90 (1200m), has comfortably won each of the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) and Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) most recently. Drawn well in barrier 10 with Chris Parnham in the saddle, Voodoo Lad will carry only 54kgs in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
Counterattack undoubtedly has the class to figure in the dying stages of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, but is a bit of a non-winner and is perhaps best considered as a fold in a trifecta. Finishing second in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) and winning the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) most notably in autumn and winter, the Redoute’s Choice entire ran on for second in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) first-up a fortnight ago. Counterattack will be partnered by Craig Williams in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes from barrier 7.
Thames Court ($20)
Thames Court is the new stable star of David Brideoake, and the talented mare has returned to racing in particularly smart form this time. Winner of the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) most notably in autumn, the Commands mare has so-far finished second in each of the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) this time in. Allocated the rails and charged with carrying only 52kgs, Thames Court is over the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes odds at her current quote.
